Karen, Hands Uplifted-
is a certified American Sign Language teacher and is a native Houstonian.
She has been working with the Deaf as well as teaching those who want to
work with the Deaf since 1986. She has a M.S. degree in Deaf Education and B.S.
in Child & Family Services. Karen is a BEI state certified interpreter and a NIC
candidate who has taught ASL as a foreign language to home school students since
2003 while also working part-time as a freelance interpreter. Prior to teaching
home school students, she spent seven years teaching in the public school system
(three years taught ASL in high schools, taught ASL on a part-time basis at a
college interpreter training program, and taught an additional four years as a
Deaf Education instructor PreK – 12th
grade). In addition, Karen has worked as a houseparent "dorm mom" at a
residential school for the Deaf and been a missionary to the Deaf. All the other
missionaries on her team were Deaf; she was the only hearing member. She
resigned as a public school teacher to start her company, Hands Uplifted, to
teach homeschooled students how to sign and interact with the Deaf by learning
their language and cultural values. Karen does not personally have children;
however, if she did, she would definitely homeschool them.

Debbie Qualls
B.A.
We’ve
finished our homeschooling adventure, seeing our two oldest complete college and
marry, as our youngest prepares to graduate from A & M next year.
The years of early morning Bible reading and historically-based read-alouds
gave them a good foundation, and I appreciate getting to continue the cycle with
the students in my classes! Although I earned a teaching degree from
Stephen
F. Austin
State
University, training for teaching this class comes
from a love of literature and history, and periodic tutelage from Pat McFarlane
over the past eleven years, as well as from listening to the students express
what works for them. ~ II Cor. 4:7. Contact Debbie at
